The pharmaceutical central number (PZN for short) is a uniform identification key for medicines and aids throughout Germany, which the respective manufacturer must enter on the outer packaging in a machine-readable manner.

Using this eight-digit code (usually printed both as a bar code and as a numeric code), each drug, medical or pharmacy product can be clearly identified.

The PZN provides nationwide information on the pharmaceutical manufacturer for each medicinal product and aid, as well as on the product name, dosage form, pack size and potency.

Originally developed for more efficient ordering, delivery and billing between pharmaceutical wholesalers and pharmacies, the PZN is now not only an important part of pharmaceutical logistics, but also of the German healthcare system, as it is also used to bill pharmaceuticals between pharmacies and health insurance companies.

The PZN is issued in Germany by the information center for medicinal products (IFA) and is valid for at least two years, but is usually extended for as long as the respective labeled product is commercially available.
